Sorting
Pigeon Hole

Pigeon holes are small, dedicated storage slots or compartments typically used for temporarily holding small picked items, order packets, or individual SKU units during sorting or packing.
They help organize picked items by order or batch, making it easy for packers to quickly locate, verify, and pack them correctly.

  • Commonly used in B2C operations, where multiple small orders are picked together and then sorted by order number into individual pigeon holes.

  • Each slot acts as a temporary staging area until the order is packed and moved to dispatch.

Benefit:
Improves order accuracy, reduces mix-ups, and streamlines the packing process in high-volume environments.

  • Pickers collect items for multiple orders together in a single picklist

  • At the sorting area, items are separated order-wise and placed into individual pigeon holes (small slots or bins) labeled with order IDs.

  • Items in each pigeon hole are checked against the order to ensure accuracy and completeness.

  • Packers take items directly from pigeon holes, pack them by order, and mark them ready to ship.

  • In WMS, pigeon hole locations may be mapped in the system, so scanning an item or pigeon hole updates order status in re - al time.
Top Menu → settings → Pigeon Holes

  • This method reduces packing errors, supports high-volume order sorting, and keeps small or similar-looking items organized.

On sorting screen orders could be coded in 3 different color :

  1. Blue Color : The label generation is in progress

  2. Red Color : There is an error in label generation from shipper or marketplace

The info icon would show the error message

  1. White Color: Label/ invoice is generated and the sorting can be completed

Once the orders are turned white the right icon can be clicked to complete order wise sorting

Upon clicking the “complete sorting” icon, the user would be required to scan all the order items again, ensuring the correct items from the picked basket are sorted for the order

Once all the items have been scanned the order moves to packing
